Grand Granola Recipe

Here's an idea of what to do with all your cheap Quaker oats from Walgreens this week!

Grand Granola
3 c. Rolled oats
1 c. Sliced almonds, walnuts, macademias or pecans
1/2 c. Sesame seeds
1/2 c. Shredded coconut, sweetened
1/2 t. Salt
6 T. Brown sugar
6 T. Maple syrup
1/4 c. Canola oil
1 T. Vanilla

Mix all ingredients together and bake on a cookie sheet at 250 degrees for 1 hour. Stir and bake 15 more minutes.

When I made this a few months ago, I left out the sesame seeds and the nuts because I didn't have any on hand, but it still turned out scrumptious! I love eating granola with yogurt for breakfast. Next time I'm for sure making a double batch.

Cheap Quaker Oats @ Walgreens

Have you all seen this deal? I stumbled across it yesterday when I found this $1 Quaker Oatmeal printable coupon.

2/$3 Quaker Oats (with in-ad coupon page 2)
-$1 Quaker MFQ HERE
= $0.50 each!

Rite Aid Shopping Trip

I went to Rite Aid yesterday for the first time in 7 weeks. Wahoo! I'm a little rusty, because I actually screwed up a little...I'll show you how.

Transaction #1:
$8.99 Huggies
$4.99 Contac
$1.99 Ivory
$1.99 Ivory
$3.33 Tresemme
-$5/20 RAQ
-$3 Huggies MFQ (home mailer)
-$1 Huggies RAQ
-$2 Contac MFQ
-$1 Ivory MFQ
-$1 Ivory MFQ
= $8.29 + tax
(And get back $5.99)

Transaction #2:$8.99 Huggies
$4.99 Theraflu
$2.00 GE
$3.33 Tresemme
$0.50 Nylons (to make a headband!)
-$5/20 RAQ
-$3 Huggies MFQ (home mailer)
-$1 Huggies RAQ
-$2 Theraflu MFQ
= $8.81 + tax
(And get back $5.00)

So I screwed up in two ways. The first is that I thought there was a valid Tresemme RAQ right now. It was in with all the other video values coupons that expire in February -- but it was actually the one from November. Duh! I even printed it and took it with me. Like I said, I'm a little rusty. So that cost me $4, but oh well.

Secondly, I screwed up my pictures, lol. I should have the Theraflu in the bottom picture, but I accidentally put the Contac in there again.

But overall, still a good week for diapers and such.

(Speaking of diapers -- everyone kept saying, oh you should only buy 1 or 2 packs of newborn size diapers before the baby gets here because they grow out of them so quickly. I'm here to tell you that I opened my 9th pack of newborn size yesterday. Boy am I glad I had a big stash!)

2009 Summary

I finally tallied the totals from my spendings spreadsheet for 2009. The "spent" total includes all groceries and household items, but does not include eating out. The "saved" total includes all coupon savings as well as "buy 10, save $5 promotions," etc.

January:
Spent $84.99
Saved $1352.92

February:
Spent $52.30
Saved $990.90

March:
Spent $58.12
Saved $465.59

April:
Spent $61.53
Saved $63.70

May:
Spent $95.33
Saved $123.04

June:
Spent $143.83
Saved $275.85

July:
Spent $112.02
Saved $197.31

August:
Spent $65.23
Saved $410.75

September:
Spent $88.84
Saved $187.93

October:
Spent $82.79
Saved $537.83

November:
Spent $55.86
Saved $40.45

December:
Spent $127.41
Saved $10.68

Total 2009 spent: $1028.25
Total 2009 saved: $4656.95

That represents an average spending of $85 per month and total savings of 78%! Not bad considering I had a baby this year, so there were a few bad morning-sickness months and a few home-bound months.

I can already tell that most things in life will be a little more challenging this year with a new baby, so I'm really going to have to prioritize and make good use of my time.
Goals for 2010
  • Make weekly meal plans
  • Stay under $100 per month
