Where Does Your Produce Come From?

I stumbled across a cool website recently that I thought I'd share. It's called Trace Produce. You can enter the product lot number (from the sticker of any of your produce you buy at the store) on their website and it will show you exactly where your produce came from, how it was grown, and even details about the farm and farmer! I thought it was sort of neat to be able to get to know what you're eating a little better. :)

Check it out HERE.

My Walmart Shopping Trip -- 41% Savings

I went to Walmart this morning and did some pricematching for the week. My store didn't have the Planters Peanut Butter, so I'll have to go to Smith's for that -- but everything else was fairly well stocked. I also found some beer rebates while I was there, so it was a good trip!

$0.10 Maruchan Ramen x 24 (pricematched)
$0.50 S&W Beans x 2 (pricematched)
$0.89 Pictsweet Veggies x 2 (pricematched)
$0.89 Hunts Ketchup x 2 (pricematched)
$1.99 Chewy Granola Bars x 6 (pricematched)
$2.00 Hot Pocket Snackers x 2 (pricematched)
$1.09 Broccoli (pricematched)
$2.22 Cottonelle Wipes
$0.66 Yoplait Yogurt x 6
$1.58 Earthbound Farms Carrots
-$0.50/2 S&W Beans MFQ
-$0.75/2 Granola Bar MFX x 3
-$1.00 Hot Pocket MFQ x 2
-$2.22 Cottonelle Free MFQ
-$0.40/6 Yoplait MFQ
-$1.00 Earthbound Farms MFQ (previously available)
= $23.48 + tax

My total before coupons & pricematching would have been $40.26 + tax, so I saved almost $17 or 41%. Not too shabby!

Also remember to check your mailers before you go. A few weeks ago there were some differences between the Grocery Smarts List and my fliers! It's possible they vary slightly by region.

Which Produce To Buy Organic?

There was a great article in my August Parents Magazine about organic foods & shopping smart. With a growing toddler, I'm thinking harder these days about what I put in my cart & pantry. The article gave a list of the top 15 produce items that are usually low in pesticides (and therefore okay to buy non-organic) and the top 12 produce items that are usually high in pesticides (and therefore better to consider buying organic). I thought it was super helpful!

Clean 15 (generally low in pesticide residues):
  1. Onions
  2. Corn
  3. Pineapples
  4. Avocados
  5. Asparagus
  6. Sweet Peas
  7. Mangoes
  8. Eggplant
  9. Domestic Cantaloupe
  10. Kiwi
  11. Cabbage
  12. Watermelon
  13. Sweet Potatoes
  14. Grapefruit
  15. Mushrooms

Dirty Dozen (consider buying organic):
  1. Apples
  2. Celery
  3. Strawberries
  4. Peaches
  5. Spinach
  6. Imported Nectarines
  7. Imported Grapes
  8. Sweet Bell Peppers
  9. Potatoes
  10. Blueberries
  11. Lettuce
  12. Kale/Collard Greens

The article also suggested that canned fruits & veggies tend to have less pesticide residue because they're grown for the purpose of canning and don't have to look perfect for display, and are therefore treated with less chemicals. They also suggested buying low sugar & low sodium pasta sauces, and organic ketchup (which we go through a lot of at our house -- the Bambina is in a "dipping" phase!).

$0.13 and $0.15 Pampers @ Amazon

Here are a few good Pampers deals today!

Pampers Baby Dry Size 3 Diapers, 222 ct for $30.04 when you subscribe & save and "clip" the $1.50 coupon on the page. Comes to $0.13/diaper.

Pampers Baby Dry Size 4 Diapers, 192 ct for $29.23 when you subscribe & save and "clip" the $1.50 coupon on the page. Comes to $0.15/diaper.

One thing to keep in mind is that my pricepoint of $0.12/diaper that I aim for is for size 3 diapers. Bigger sizes will have less diapers per package (and hence a higher $/diaper), and smaller sizes will have more diapers per package (and hence the possibility of a lower $/diaper). Just something to remember when you're diaper shopping!
